The second largest search engine Yahoo, once again rejected the joint deal of Microsoft and investor Carl Icahn. This deal entailed Yahoo to restructure it's search engines business to Microsoft. The internet marketing company, who has been valiantly fighting the Microsoft deal for months now, has finally told it's suitor to bid to buy the whole of Yahoo.

If news is to be believed, it is said that Yahoo was given less than 24 hours to decide on the proposal. Well, this oulds more like a do or die situation. Yahoo! Wants Microsoft to Raise its Offer

Well I am back with all the latest, juicy bits of information on the Microsoft-Yahoo! deal. While we were having fun on the weekend, both these companies were busy chalking out their strategy. And with the next move, this is what the chess board looks like- Yahoo! has decided to prolong this takeover bid.

For all you people who thought that Yahoo! would give in without a fight are in for a surprise.Yahoo's board has declared that Microsoft’s $44.6 billion offer “massively undervalues" the company. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo is planning to turn down Microsoft's offer.

Even though I may not know what is going on in their boardroom, but one thing is as clear as crystal-Yahoo is aiming at milking as much as they can from this deal. Yahoo! has given an indication that it might consider the offer if Microsoft is ready to shell out at least $40 a share. Such a settlement would increase the worth of Microsoft's original cash-and-stock bid by more than $12 billion.

Microsoft on its part is hesitant to launch a proxy fight to push out Yahoo's board. A fight could increase the probability of major Yahoo employees leaving the company. Their endeavor appears to seamlessly blend the 2 companies.

Now the question that plagues everyone’s mind is how far Microsoft will go to get Yahoo! in its kitty. Microsoft has $21 billion in cash and Chris Liddell; the chief financial officer disclosed last week that Microsoft may have to borrow money to raise some amount of the cash needed to finance the deal.

To me this latest move is nothing but typical merger-and-acquisition maneuver. Only time will tell if this deal turns out to be a hostile takeover in the end.

Wikia Search the New human Search Engine

Almost a year after it was publicized the new human search engine Wikia Search is finally out at http://alpha.search.wikia.com/ . Hyped tremendously by Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, this new human powered search engine is believed to take on Google too. (Though I personally do not feel it is that powerful)

Wikia Search is based on the open source Nutch software which contains an index of web pages created by Grub (a company Wikia acquired last year). The search results at present are very meager and do not provide satisfactory answers. I believe the team really needs to work much harder behind the screens to really show some quality in these searches.

Also, not much of a human element is visible on the search engine at present. What users at present can do is add keywords to their profile - things that they are interested in, and would like to share resources with. When a search is conducted by anyone on those keywords, the user’s picture will appear in the right hand column. Much later when things will be smoother (hopefully) the user will be able to edit and improve results for searches they are interested in. Adding to this, Wikia search also allows users to contribute a “mini-article” on any topic that shall appear at the top of search results for queries posted by any person.

Wikia Search also acts as a social network where a user's profile includes basic things like photos, adding friends, interests and skills. Wikia Search profiles also have an activity stream (similar to facebook).

For all those who have been under clouds as to how the human powered search engine shall be able to rule out the leader in search engines, Google.Inc will have to wait for some more time until there are some miraculous changes in the existing form of Wikia Search.

B2B Budgets to Rise in 2008

A recent online survey reports that B2B companies are planning to increase their Internet marketing budgets for the year 2008. Given the tremendous impact of this marketing medium, more and more businesses are now planning to venture into it in full flow.

More than 60% of B2B entrepreneurs are planning to get into more number of ad categories; just an attempt to cater to diverse range of audiences. About 30% are planning to leave their budgets where they are, and only 10% want to decrease the allocated share.

The survey also revealed that most of the entrepreneurs (a good 62%) will be using the web mainly for customer acquisition. The rest 19% and 11% are aiming at increasing brand awareness and customer retention respectively.

And, this one's for service providers. More than 74% businesses are planning to spend their money on website development services. Email marketing (70%) and search engine marketing (64%) come next in the list.

Social networking, which was a 'hot' proposition all through the year 2007, is being sidelined by other forms of social media like online video, webcasting, etc. It would not be wrong to say that the age of Web 2.0 is just round the corner!

The tragic death of 13-year-old Megan Meier has shaken the online community. The American teenage girl recently committed suicide; reportedly because she was being harassed through her MySpace account.

Megan's mother, Tina Meier, has called for strict action from the cyber law makers world over. She recommends criminalisation of such behaviour; and is getting tremendous support from web users, who are now voicing similar concerns.

There have been quite a few cases of harassment and bullying, especially involving teenagers. (I have even written a post on the same!). Most of the victims of such harassment usually go through tremendous mental stress, mainly because they are impressionable at this age.

Megan's act simply proves she was completely fed up of what was being written about her. And unfortunately, this is something that can happen to any one of us; anywhere. It is quite convenient for bullies to create an account in any of the social networking sites and write whatever they want, about whoever they want.

It is time Internet legislators step forward and come up with laws against stalking, harassment and child endangerment online. Some concrete action in this regard is expected by early next year.

Online reports claim that lawmakers in the US might actually make it a misdemeanour to misrepresent one's identity on the web, especially when you are sending messages to someone. In fact, there are reports that a bill on banning online harassment might be on the cards.

As a regular user of the World Wide Web, I too have the same concern. Youngsters, especially, should not be targeted in such a way that they are incited to do something drastic.

Search engine giant, Google, has recently announced the launch of its publishing platform. To be known as Knol (as in a unit of 'knowledge'), this platform will function on the lines of Wikipedia and Maholo – two of the most popular knowledge banks online.

Web users can create topics and write content on anything and everything that interests them. They can also use various tools to interlink articles and content on the website.

However, unlike sites like Wikipedia, Knol will give absolute power to its authors. It will actually acknowledge the source of a write-up's origin by highlighting its author. Therefore, as a contributor, you can make a name for yourself in through Google.

Users will not have the rights to edit articles posted online. They can only submit their suggestions to the original author for approval. Google itself will not indulge in editing or advocating the posted content.
